Oncyclopaedion
Oncyclopaedion - a book as a critical artefact
A subjective encyclopaedia of the book, structured as an onion and presented through curiously manipulative layers of varying informational depth. This book is encyclopaedic; comprehensive in terms of information. But it is also quite oncyclopaedic; manipulatively informative in terms of comprehension. Bizarre.
The encyclopaedia aims to encapsulate the semester of my studio experience, by demonstrating what I have come to know about making books. The learning has stemmed from a range of sources, including reading material, experiential learning and practical applications. Oncyclopaedion compiles a broad spectrum of knowledge about the book into a bulb, that is accessible and can transmit to future generations.
The physical properties of the book feature a tête-bêche format (two-sided book) with multiple paper stocks which mimic an onion and distinguish between the layers. The book is divided into six sections each inspired by the parts from Naïve Set Theory, a relevant text written by Anthony Huberman.
