On the moniker 'Design Swiss-Army Knife:’
“For me it’s a multi-tooled response. It represents not only my heritage and identity, but also my personal craft, skillset, and approach within the creative field. The [Swiss-Army] knife is an iconic design object, useful in any situation, both functional and elegant. It is not an egoic claim that I can do absolutely everything, I see it as a curated selection of metaphoric tools which I utilise to achieve creative success.”
The title encapsulates how Kemp works across various areas with a multi-faceted, refined, and well-equipped range of creative tools and expertise.
Personal style
Kemp does not adhere to a specific visual style, each brief is guided by its unique context and strategy.
His creative endeavours are informed by his taste and core principles. With intentional curation, he leaves fingerprints all over the work, ensuring each project is distinctive and impactful.
Influences
Kemp creates from what surrounds him. “I draw a lot of inspiration from nature and science: systems, colours, patterns, language... That’s where the best design lives... it’s like the original blueprint for design,” he explains.
His outlook is also shaped by creators who push limits and pioneer new ways of seeing. “I admire the traditional principles of Vignelli, Bass, Rand, Brockmann, and Rams... they set the foundation for immaculate design.” he says. “I’m equally intrigued by more contemporary innovators” he adds. “Virgil, Kendrick, Kanye... Nolan, Oefner, the list goes on... These minds push me to consider how I can produce compelling and masterful work.”
Early life
How did childhood influence your perspective?
"From a young age [several] factors came into play. I used to spend hours writing and sketching, building with Lego, and I was passionate about sports. These experiences informed my sense of storytelling, play, and design thinking. From sports I gravitated to clothing which had the logos, that must have been the moment where I became immersed... it shaped how I perceive branding today. Looking back, I realise that was always the way I interpreted the world.”
